What
is a Domain Name?
Every
site in the Internet has an unique identification so that it can be
contacted as and when required. It is called I.P Address , consisting
of digits like 194.217.172.1. As it is difficult to remember and hard
to mentally associate it with a particular site, a parallel naming system
is there - which is called a domain name.So instead of typing 194.217.172.1
, you type www.futurenet.co.uk
Domain
name typically consist of a host name followed by a top level domain
category such as .com,.co,.org,.net or country specific one like .uk,.in
etc
Why
domain name registration ?
A web address
is more than your Internet address, it's your
Internet identity, your online brand name.
It puts your business on the map of today's business world, opening
your business to over 100 million Internet users worldwide. If you're
serious about your business, then it is vital that you have
your own easy to remember domain name.
The main reasons
are twofold:
No one will take any company
seriously that has their Web site hosted by one of these free Web page
hosts. It doesn't say a lot for a company that can't
even afford to pay for their own Web space . Just ask anyone
who is thinking of making a purchase on the Internet who they would
buy from...
http://www.someispname.com/business/~yournamehere/
or
http://www.mycompany.com/
You
will have a domain name that is relevant to your company and is much
easier to remember for future reference. My domain name is "101biztips.com".
Now imagine that it is "freespacehost.com/uk/~business/101biztips".
Which
one is easier to remember?

different types of domain category

Most businesses
in the U.S. as well as thousands around the world choose a domain
name ending in ".com". Some businesses outside the US also choose
to end the name in a country code, such as ".com.au" (Australia).
Unless your customers are mainly based within your country and
you want to make a point of being a local business, then it is
best to just use ".com"also try to name your site according to
the theme of your business.

How can you register a domain?
You will have to
apply to a domain name registration authority. In the beginning, there
was InterNIC - a singular authority for registration of all .com,.net,.org
domain names.Today it is better known as Network Solutions
,and no longer a monopoly. The second largest is Register-It!
that provides similar services with much easier registration process.
You can register
from their site. But there is a problem.Technically all domains to be
"parked" once they are registered. It's something like buying
a car.If you buy it,you can't expect that the manufacturer to keep it
for you in the event that you don't have a garage! So, you need to specify
a name server that will handle your domain. This will be the nameserver
of the webhost or service providerwho will host your domain.
Most web service
providers also register domains for you and they take all the pain to
the related technical and official formalities. They also provide their
nameservers to park your domain free!!
If you decide to
register a domain name through a web service provider ,I'll advise you
to choose a reliable and reputed one-
so that you can get all the technical help when you need . Adgrafix
and Virtual
Empire are two very popular name in web hosting and domain name
services and are famous for their quick technical helps. I highly recommend
them.
